Discover the Vitality of Joy: Cultivate Fun, Connection, and Flow
Importance of joy and fun for our life and wellbeing
In our human experience, there are three main factors that stand out prominently and contribute to a life filled with vitality, energy, and a sense of well-being: joy, passion, and purpose.
I talked about the importance of passion and purpose in the previous newsletter, in this one I’ll talk about the importance of joy for our life and well-being and how to get it more.
What Is “Joy” and What's Its Importance?
Joy is the feeling and emotion that effortlessly brings a smile to our faces, uplifts our spirits, and fills our hearts with an indescribable lightness. illuminating our lives with warmth and vitality.
Joy is an inner state of bliss and contentedness that arises from within. Unlike happiness, which often relies on external circumstances, joy is an inner reservoir that can be tapped into at any time. Although it’s subtle, it is also a very profound sense of peace and fulfillment that permeates our being.
Joy is an emotion that’s very high on the vibration ladder. High vibrations are generally associated with positive qualities and feelings: joy is one of the most important vibrations that can be cultivated for boundless energy and uplift our well-being.
Joy is a vital component of our well-being, impacting various facets of our existence. When we experience joy, our entire being vibrates with a newfound vitality. It invigorates us, recharging our batteries and infusing us with a sense of enthusiasm for life's journey.
In moments of joy, fatigue seems to disappear, as if swept away by a light energy that fills us up.
Joy also acts as a counterbalance to stress, anxiety, and the challenges of daily life alleviating the weight of worries and offering lightness, positivity and clarity amid the chaos.
Studies have highlighted the role of joy in reducing cortisol levels, the hormone associated with stress, and therefore contributing to a healthier mental state.
The ripple effect of joy extends beyond the individual to the collective. When one person radiates joy, it has a magnetic effect, uplifting those around them. Joy fosters connections, strengthens relationships, and creates an atmosphere where kindness, empathy, and compassion flourish.
How To Cultivate More Joy In Our Daily Life?
Cultivating joy involves engaging in and nurturing the activities, experiences, and connections that bring us closer to that state of inner contentment.
Engaging in activities that you enjoy doing, spending time with loved ones, practicing mindfulness and meditation, or making an impact of the world can all help us access this profound emotion.
Although deep inside we know that joy is super important for us and that we should get it more in our daily life, we might also feel overwhelmed about how to achieve that.
One of the best ways to experience more joy in our lives is by engaging in things and activities that we enjoy and bring us fun.
And before you go “I don’t have time to engage in fun activities” or “I’m super fatigued and I don’t have the energy to do hours-long fun activities.” hold on, we’re going to get to know fun through a different lens.
The Prescription For Having More Fun
Catherine Price, author, speaker, and founder of Screen/Life Balance, in her book The Power of Fun: How to Feel Alive Again and her Ted Talk says that fun is the secret to feeling alive.
In her research of collecting thousands of stories from people around the world, she noticed that people who are having fun, look like they’re being illuminated from within.
She says that fun is a feeling, not an activity, and true fun produces “this visceral sense of lightness and joy and that it’s redient.”
In her research, Catherine discovered that all activities that produce sense of fun, lightness, and joy have 3 factors: playfulness, connection, and flow.
Let’s explore all of these three factors.
Playfulness
By playfulness, Catherine means “having a light-hearted attitude of doing things for the sake of doing them and not caring too much about the outcome and letting go of perfectionism.”
Connection
Although Catherine says you can have fun alone, in the majority of her stories of people, another person or group of people is involved.
Flow
Flow is the state where we’re so engaged and focused on whatever we’re doing that we lose track of time. It’s when we are in the zone.
So when we experience all of those 3 factors together, we have fun, we experience fun and joy that we know is so good for us. Based on that, Catherine suggests to fill up your life with more moments of playfulness, connection, and flow.
But how to do that? How to get more fun and joy in our lives? Here are some Catherine’s suggestions and ideas:
Reduce distractions to increase flow.
Anything that distracts you, is going to kick you out of the flow and prevent you from having fun. In today’s world, the number one distraction source is our phones, so reducing their usage will help you massively.
Increase connection by interacting more with other human beings in real life.
Again, although we can have fun alone, it’s far better and easier to have it with other people. To do that you need to connect and interact with other people.
Increase playfulness by finding opportunities to rebel.
By “rebelling” Catherine means “playful deviance: finding ways to break the rules of responsible adulthood and giving yourself permission to get a kick out of your own life.”
Most of us take this life way too seriously and don’t allow ourselves to have fun which is preventing us from having fun and achieving that joyful emotional state.
Prioritize it.
According to Catherine, one of the main reasons why we’re not having enough fun is that we’re not making it a priority.
We prioritize other things and responsibilities in life and fun ends up at the end of our to-do lists and we never get to do it. This then robs us of joy in life and empties our energy buckets and energy stores.
So make an appointment with a person or for activities that you know bring you a sense of fun and joy in your life and honor it.
