Microdosing For Stress
Have you ever experienced that overwhelming sensation as if your world is collapsing around you? You're exhausted, but sleep eludes you, and when you finally doze off, it feels like entering a dream that strangely mirrors the reality you just left behind.
The stressors in your life seem relentless, and it feels impossible to get relief. You reach a breaking point.
In such a moment, the last thing you'd consider to take the edge off would be to gobble down magic mushrooms or drop acid...
But, hear me out.
I'm not suggesting indulging in a full-blown psychedelic experience at a Dead show (you can if that’s your thing).
What I'm proposing is consuming an extremely small amount of a psychedelic substance, so minuscule that you won't experience any psychoactive effects… AKA microdosing. The goal is to harness the significant mental benefits microdosing has to offer, particularly in managing stress.
Let’s dig in a little…
Microdosing psychedelics may have the potential to alleviate stress through some subtle yet powerful mechanisms… which include:
1. Boosting Your Mood
Classic psychedelics like psilocybin or LSD, mimic serotonin, a neurotransmitter responsible for mood. These compounds bind to serotonin receptors, promoting an uplifted mood and a mental shift to help you get out of a funk.
Stress brings you down, and emotional turmoil is a stressor in its own right. They mutually influence each other.
Psychedelics, however, have the ability to shift your perspective positively and serve as a protective barrier against stress.
2. Increasing Open-mindedness and Creative Thinking
Turns out, you CAN teach an old dog new tricks!
By enhancing neuroplasticity—the brain's capacity to adapt and change—psychedelics can ease a rigid mindset, allowing the cultivation of greater adaptability.
You can literally rewire your brain to make it work for you instead of against you.
And hey, psychedelics can spark your creativity! You'll start thinking in new ways, breaking free from your own limits to see things from a whole new angle.
You’ll be able to achieve a state of mind that’s not so focused on the obstacles but sees the solutions and opportunities that abound. You’ll be mentally flexible and kicking stress to the curb!
3. Disrupting the Area of the Brain Keeping You Rigid
In our human brains, we have what is known as the default mode network (DMN). It’s a neural network that is super important for our mental processes.
However, when the DMN is overactive, it can keep us a little too fixated on things, overly self-aware, and self-conscious, and keeps us ruminating on the worst-case scenario – talk about stress-inducing.
Psychedelics have been shown to target the DMN and shift its activity, liberating you from incessant and all-consuming mental loops giving you the mental reprieve required to leave stress behind.
4. Energy When You Need It Most
Stress is, well, stressful… and it takes a massive toll on your brain and body, resulting in sensations of lethargy and fatigue.
Small doses of psychedelics, on the other hand, offer a potent cognitive enhancement, serving as a valuable tool for boosting brain function. It has the ability to elevate energy levels, particularly mental energy and stamina, while simultaneously sharpening focus.
This combination of benefits not only provides you with the mental fortitude to navigate external stressors but also equips you to address internal stressors effectively as well.
5. Forming Habits That Will Keep Stress At Bay (And Become More Resilient)
Additionally, microdosing has been linked to the adoption, continuation, and enhancement of positive habits such as regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and meditation—practices that can effectively combat stress.
But the benefits don't end there.
When stress hits, it's common to turn to substances or self-destructive behaviors for a quick escape. However, microdosing prompts a second thought.
Instead of leaning towards addictive substances like cigarettes, alcohol, or cannabis, research has shown that microdosing can help reduce dependency and addictive behaviors.
